Basic Concept of Book Printing
Book publishing involves transforming a written manuscript into a professionally designed, printed, and registered book that can be sold or distributed.
An ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is a unique identification code that helps catalog and track the book worldwide for sales, libraries, and online platforms.
1. Manuscript Preparation
Finalize your content (text, images, and illustrations).
Proofread and edit for grammar, layout consistency, and readability.
2. Book Interior Design & Layout
Use professional software such as Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, or CorelDRAW for page setup.
Apply character and paragraph styles for a consistent look.
Maintain proper margins, font size, headers, and footers.
3. Cover Design
Design a visually appealing front, spine, and back cover.
Include title, author name, and publisher logo.
Leave space for the ISBN barcode on the back cover.
4. ISBN Registration
Apply for an ISBN through the official national ISBN agency (in India: Raja Rammohun Roy National Agency for ISBN).
You’ll receive a unique ISBN number for each book version (paperback, hardcover, eBook, etc.).
Generate and place the barcode on the book cover.
5. Proof & Review
Print a sample (proof copy) to check design, alignment, color, and print quality.
Review carefully before mass printing.
6. Printing
Choose printing type:
Digital printing – for small quantities.
Offset printing – for bulk orders.
Select paper quality, binding type (perfect bound, hardbound, etc.), and finish (matte/glossy).
7. Copyright & Legal Formalities
Register your copyright (optional but recommended) to protect your content.
8. Publishing & Distribution
Publish under your own imprint or through a publishing house.
Distribute via:
Bookstores, libraries, and educational institutions.
E-book platforms (Kindle, Google Books, etc.)
9. Promotion
Promote through social media, press releases, and book launch events.
